Powder Magazine: This was where the ammunition was stored. In the 1820s, soldiers would have been equipped with .69 caliber muskets. To fire the weapon, the soldier would have to ram the powder and a bullet (or ball) down the muzzle. Then he would pull back a spring-loaded flint. When the trigger was pulled, the flint would ignite the powder, sending the bullet down the barrel. Each box here held 1000 musket ball cartridges, 1000 musket or pistol flints, pistol cartidges, and grenades. |
